Digital Darkroom Lab

Windows or Macintosh?

Our computers are running Windows XP Professional, but most Macintosh users adapt just fine to working in a Windows environment, particularly because Photoshop behaves almost identically on both platforms. If you're a Macintosh user, read here before registering for a course.

What is used at the Lepp Institute?

We get these questions all the time about camera gear and computer equipment. So we thought we'd give you all the answers in one place!

The Lepp Institute of Digital Imaging offers a state-of-the-art digital darkroom lab environment, ensuring participants the best opportunity to learn the latest techniques in digital imaging. With an instructor and two assistants, you're assured of a great instructor to student ratio.

Each of the sixteen participants for each course will have their own Intel Pentium 4 computer system running Microsoft Windows XP Professional (more details for Mac users here). Each computer has two monitors to maximize the Photoshop experience. These computers have 2GB of RAM and 80GB of hard drive space, providing all the power needed to accomplish the most advanced techniques with high-resolution images. A CD-R drive and our Nero CD burning Software will allow students to save their final images to CD for taking home, or students can bring an external hard drive that will connect to a USB 2.0 port (readable by Windows-based computers) to download their images at the end of the course. Each two participants will share a Canon 5100. A large format Canon 9500 photo printers and additional scanners will also be available to the participants. All computers are networked together, allowing users to make use of the various printers available.

The instructor's dual-monitor display is projected for the class using digital projectors so you can follow along throughout the instruction, seeing exactly how the techniques are performed and practicing them yourself on your own images.

In addition to the time spent in class throughout the course, the lab will be available for the use of students in the evenings after normal classroom hours to work on their images and make prints.
